Sodium hyaluronate in skincare

Amanda Jensen

What is Sodium Hyaluronate? Sodium hyaluronate (Sodium Hyaluronate) is a form of hyaluronic acid that is widely used in skincare for its ability to hydrate the skin. The ingredient helps the skin bind water and contributes to the skin feeling softer, smoother, and more hydrated. It is found in everything from serums and face creams to toners, essences, and sheet masks, and is one of the most common ingredients in Korean skincare. Although the names are often used together, sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid are not exactly the same thing. Sodium hyaluronate is a salt of hyaluronic acid and has a lower molecular size, which allows it to more easily reach the outermost layers of the skin where it helps improve the skin’s moisture balance. This does not mean that it penetrates deeply into the skin, but it can provide effective hydration where the skin needs it most. Because the ingredient is gentle and works well with most other skincare ingredients, it is used in products for almost all skin types. Whether the skin is dry, oily, sensitive, or mature, sodium hyaluronate is often an important part of a hydrating skincare routine. What does Sodium Hyaluronate do for the skin? Sodium hyaluronate is primarily known for its ability to improve the skin’s moisture balance. When the skin receives enough moisture, it feels softer, smoother, and more elastic, while the skin barrier also functions better. This makes the ingredient appreciated both in everyday skincare and in products used together with more active ingredients. It contributes several positive benefits for the skin. Hydrates the skin Sodium hyaluronate acts as a moisture-binding ingredient that helps the skin retain water in the outermost layers of the skin. The result is that the skin feels hydrated for a longer time and has a softer and plumper appearance. Helps strengthen the skin barrier Skin that has sufficient moisture is better able to maintain a strong skin barrier. Sodium hyaluronate therefore indirectly helps the skin protect itself against dryness and external stressors by improving the skin’s moisture level. Reduces the feeling of tightness When the skin is dry, it often feels tight and less comfortable. By improving the skin’s hydration, sodium hyaluronate can reduce that feeling and make the skin more supple and comfortable. Gives the skin a plumper appearance When the skin is well hydrated, fine dry lines often become less noticeable. The ingredient does not permanently change the skin’s structure, but it can give the skin a smoother, softer, and more hydrated appearance. Which skin types is Sodium Hyaluronate suitable for? One of the biggest benefits of sodium hyaluronate is that the ingredient suits almost all skin types. Because it hydrates without feeling heavy or greasy, it is used in products for both dry and oily skin. It is also usually very gentle, which means that even sensitive skin tends to tolerate it well. Dry skin Dry skin often lacks both moisture and a well-functioning skin barrier. Sodium hyaluronate helps restore the skin’s moisture balance and can reduce the feeling of dryness, flaking, and tightness. Sensitive skin The ingredient is usually very gentle and is often used in products for sensitive skin. It hydrates without exfoliating or disrupting the skin barrier, which often makes the skin feel calmer and more comfortable. Oily skin Even oily skin can become dehydrated, especially after cleansing or the use of active ingredients. Sodium hyaluronate hydrates the skin without feeling oily and is therefore also suitable for people with high sebum production. Combination skin For combination skin, sodium hyaluronate helps hydrate drier areas while still feeling light on the areas that produce more sebum. Mature skin As the skin ages, its natural ability to retain moisture decreases. Sodium hyaluronate helps the skin feel plumper, softer, and more hydrated, which often gives it a healthier appearance. What skin concerns can Sodium Hyaluronate help with? Sodium hyaluronate does not treat a specific skin disease, but it is often used to improve the skin’s moisture level and reduce discomfort that occurs when the skin is dehydrated. Because many skin concerns are made worse by a lack of moisture, the ingredient is common in products for both daily skincare and recovery. It is often used in products to counteract: Dry and dehydrated skin Tight skin Superficial dehydration lines A weakened skin barrier Dull skin lacking radiance Dehydration after using retinol, AHA, or BHA acids Which ingredients work well together with Sodium Hyaluronate? Sodium hyaluronate is one of the easiest skincare ingredients to combine with others. Because its main role is to hydrate the skin, it works together with most active ingredients without negatively affecting their effectiveness. On the contrary, it can help the skin feel more hydrated and comfortable, which means that ingredients that might otherwise feel drying are often better tolerated. It is therefore often combined with ingredients that strengthen the skin barrier, soothe the skin, or treat specific skin concerns. Ceramides Ceramides strengthen the skin barrier and help the skin reduce moisture loss. While sodium hyaluronate binds moisture, ceramides help preserve it, making the combination especially good for dry and sensitive skin. Niacinamide Niacinamide helps strengthen the skin barrier, balance sebum production, and even out skin tone. Together with sodium hyaluronate, the skin gets both intensive hydration and support for its natural protective barrier. Panthenol Panthenol is a soothing and moisturizing ingredient that is often used in products for sensitive or irritated skin. Together, the ingredients help the skin feel softer, more hydrated, and less stressed. Centella Asiatica Centella Asiatica is valued for its soothing properties and is often used when the skin feels sensitive or irritated. In combination with sodium hyaluronate, the skin receives both plenty of moisture and ingredients that help the skin recover. Retinol and exfoliating acids Retinol as well as AHA and BHA acids can sometimes make the skin dry or tight, especially when you start using them. Sodium hyaluronate is therefore often used together with these ingredients to provide the skin with more moisture and reduce the feeling of dryness. When is Sodium Hyaluronate not suitable? Sodium hyaluronate is a very mild ingredient that suits most skin types and rarely causes irritation. It is therefore often used even in products developed for sensitive skin. Just like with all skincare ingredients, it is the formulation of the finished product that determines how the skin reacts. If you know that you are sensitive to any other ingredient in the product, you should always read the ingredient list before use. If you use several active products at the same time and your skin feels irritated, it may also be a good idea to simplify your skincare routine until the skin has recovered. How do you use Sodium Hyaluronate in your skincare routine? Sodium hyaluronate can be used both morning and evening and is found in many different types of skincare products, including toners, essences, serums, and face creams. Since the ingredient works well with most other skincare ingredients, it is easy to include in both simple and more advanced skincare routines. For best results, products with sodium hyaluronate are preferably applied to slightly damp skin. Afterward, a face cream can help lock in the moisture and reduce the skin's moisture loss during the day or night. In this way, the skin has better conditions for staying hydrated for a longer period of time.
